Volunteer Feature : Food ETC CIC
Bedford based Food etc is looking for more volunteers. Director and founder Julie Clay explains what they do and the sort of people they are looking for.
Food etc is a charity that transforms lives through food, helping people make healthier, more affordable food choices by teaching them to cook from scratch. But just as important as supporting the people they help is the support they offer their volunteers—without whom their mission wouldn’t be possible.
From the outset, Food etc ensures volunteering is welcoming and accessible. New volunteers benefit from a straightforward onboarding process, which includes an enhanced DBS check and an online food hygiene course—both funded by the charity. This means volunteers can get started with confidence, knowing they are fully equipped and compliant.
Training is practical and hands-on. New team members shadow experienced volunteers across different settings, gaining real-world experience in delivering workshops. This approach not only builds skills but also confidence, enabling volunteers to thrive.
Communication is another cornerstone of support. A dedicated WhatsApp group keeps volunteers connected and informed. Here, they share workshop tips, swap recipes, discuss events, and adjust schedules flexibly to fit around their other commitments—making it easier for people from all walks of life to take part.
Food etc also recognises the importance of community and appreciation. Volunteers are invited to regular informal coffee mornings and quarterly activity-based socials, helping them feel part of something meaningful and fun.
Perhaps most appealing is the flexible commitment model. Volunteers sign up for one six-week course at a time, with no pressure for long-term involvement. This makes it ideal for people who want to give back but need flexibility.
Through this supportive, inclusive approach, Food etc not only helps people cook healthier meals—it also creates a positive, rewarding space for volunteers to grow, connect, and make a real difference.
If this sounds as if it might be something you’d like to get involved in, please take a look at our website www.foodetc.org.uk or our Facebook/Instagram @food etc Bedford to find out a little more. Then contact me to arrange to meet up to talk about what we do and what you’d like from volunteering by emailing hello@foodetc.org.uk. We look forward to hearing from you and hopefully joining the team soon.
