Improving numeracy skills
06 July 2022
Do you work with people who want to improve their numeracy skills?
If so Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire Council would like to hear from you as part of a 3 year programme called the Multiply Project beginning in September. This project is aimed at helping people improve their ability to understand and use maths in their daily life whether at home or at work. If you are delivering something in this area they would welcome talking with you about how they might be able to support and build upon existing provision or fund new and innovative approaches which build these skills.
The programme aims to address the following.
Numeracy isn’t just the use of complicated formulas and calculations which won’t be ever be applied in real life, maths is the universal language which is applied in almost every aspect of life.
How much should I spend today? When I will be able to buy a new car? Should I save more? The simple answer to such type of question is maths. We prepare budgets based on simple calculations with the help of simple mathematical concepts. Everything which is going on around us is somehow related to maths.
- Numeracy is necessary for everyday living. From daily activities like telling the time, cooking, and setting the table to more difficult tasks such as understanding mobile phone plans, planning a trip, reading a map, and understanding timetables.
- Numeracy skills involve understanding numbers, counting, solving number problems, measuring, estimating, sorting, noticing patterns, adding, and subtracting numbers, and so on. Children and adults need numeracy and maths skills to do everyday things like: solve problems.
So, do you want to help your child with maths at home? Do you want to improve your own understanding of maths?
